December 2000
* 21 December 2000 -- Mingyan Liu and Yimin Jiang received their Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering during the A.J. Clark School of Engineering's winter commencement ceremony.
Mingyan's dissertation is entitled, "Network Performance Modeling Design, and Dimensioning Technologies". Yimin's dissertation is entitled, "Synchronization and Parameter Estimation in Wireless Communications". Dr. John Baras was their advisor.
* 13 December 2000 -- Teachers from the Prince George's County School System received a demonstration of the Center's research in improving TCP/IP performance over two-way satellite links and local multicast redistribution of Internet content using Hybrid Internet and terrestrial wireless. The demos were given by Vijay Bharadwaj in the Hybrid Networks Laboratory.
The teachers represented middle and high schools and are part of the Maryland MESA (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement) Program and SECME (a pre-college alliance to increase the number of underrepresented students in science, engineering, and mathematics). Their campus host was the Center for Minorities in Science & Engineering in our School of Engineering.
* DirecDuo equipment was installed at The Maryland Hybrid Networks Center (HyNet). The equipment, provided by Hughes Network Systems (HNS), will be used to perform research on hybrid satellite internet access.
November 2000
* On Nov. 8 the wireless research work of The Maryland Hybrid Networks Center (HyNet) was showcased to a group of Baltimore-based business and government leaders visiting the University of Maryland as guests of President Dan Mote.
* Congratulations to Professor John S. Baras (ECE/ISR) and Nick Sidiropoulos, who were issued US Patent 6,127,669 for "Computer-Aided Determination of Window and Level Settings for Filmless Radiology" on October 3, 2000. Sidiropoulos, a former ISR student and assistant research scientist, earned his Ph.D. with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and is now an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota.
* ISR has received a three-year, $500,000 National Science Foundation grant for Combined Research and Curriculum Development in Systems Engineering. ISR's faculty team includes Principal Investigator Professor John S. Baras (ECE/ISR), Co-Principal Investigator Associate Professor Mark Austin (CEE/ISR), Professor Michael O. Ball (Robert H. Smith School of Business/ISR), Assistant Professor Jeffrey Herrmann (ME/ISR), and Assistant Professor Linda C. Schmidt (ME).
